#WFH: Start Where You Are to Measure Performance

Effective measurement can be part of the organization, not an afterthought or an interface, but the heart and soul of an operation. Measurement is only the beginning. It is important that this translates into action. For some people changing and adapting is easy, for other is it not. Old beliefs, ways of doing things and habits of thought are very difficult for them to change.
Appropriate skills, knowledge, expectations, abilities and values need to apply in the virtual workplace. Developing and implementing effective virtual workplace performance measures requires effort and commitment. It also requires an investment into systems and procedures, but this is relatively small compared to the benefits. It can identify both problems and present opportunities. It assures that everyone regardless of location is on the same page and working toward the same goals. It allows the organization to attract and keep the best re-sources needed to achieve the objectives and goals.

Developing and implementing effective virtual workplace performance measures requires effort and commitment. It also requires an invest-ment into systems and procedures, but this is rela-tively small compared to the benefits. It can identify both problems and present opportunities. It assures that everyone regardless of location is on the same page and working toward the same goals. It allows the organization to attract and keep the best re-sources needed to achieve the objectives and goals. It allows workers to lead a balanced and productive life while understanding their contribution to the organization’s success. It allows managers to take responsibility for meeting goals and provides them with measures that are objective and not based on guesswork. Most importantly, measuring performance anywhere takes effort.

There are certain steps to setting up any level of performance measurement. These include:

• Deciding what you want to measure
• Figuring out where you are going to get the data
• Collecting the data and getting it to the people who will analyze it
• Analyzing, summarizing and presenting the data
• Turning the summarized data into performance information
• Communicating it to the people who will use it to make decisions

Use the information to decide what actions to take to improve performance!
