#AI@Work: Can We Change Our Mindset?

Lawyers, real estate agents, doctors, salespeople and every other occupation you can think of will be changed by AI. Some lower wage occupations are less vulnerable including home health care aides, plumbers, landscapers, maintenance crews and groundskeepers. How dramatic will this impact be? That depends on who you talk to! Some reports indicate that about 60% of current jobs could have at least 30% or more of their role automated. Most occupations will be affected significantly. The emphasis will shift from longer hours worked to work of higher value. Sadly, so little of what happens in the workplace requires true creativity or human emotional connection. This is about to change. The pace of transformation is picking up as more AI finds its way into our daily lives. Obsolescence and disruption are fueled by the speed that these technologies are being adapted. It is in directly related to the agility of the organization. Agile organizations can and will redefine roles, adapt new processes and change culture and mindset.

Humans become even more important in a world upended by technology. Maximizing productivity requires more than just hiring warm bodies. Attrition and turnover, issues that have plagued companies for years, are front and center. Organizations will need to change their mindset. They will need to not only hire the best people for the job, but also train and retrain them to keep them as engaged and as productive as possible. AI use for recruiting, engagement and retention is an area where technology has the ability to bring humanity back into the workplace. The days of Human Resources just hiring, doing annual reviews and going through the motions is outdated. Productivity is a marriage between technologies and human talent able to determine when to intervene.

Obsolescence and disruption effect economics. Most organizations will face significant change in the next decade. The economics of automation and AI includes exploring the tradeoffs. This includes replacing vs. expanding various roles. It also includes implications for human talent in the organization.
