Is Working From Home What You Expected?
Expediency and expectancy have changed the way we live. Adjusting to change is something we just do. There is nowhere to hide but we feel like we are invisible. We send text messages so that we can say what we want to say when we want to say it. We’d rather write remotely than speak directly. It gives us the freedom to express ourselves and the cover to de-individuate – to leave behind the persona we have created in favor of expressing freely who and what we want and who and what we are. With this freedom comes the ability to push boundaries, to recreate and redefine our limits. We can explore new frontiers and become new individuals.
Carl Jung used the term individuation to describe this: “In general, it is the process by which individual beings are formed and differentiated; in particular, it is the development of the psychological individual as a being distinct from the general, collective psychology” (Jung, 1971). Our definition of self is changing rapidly. We are no longer dependent on the three dimensions of circumstances, people and events. These no longer define who we are. Connections do. Our connections are changing the way we view ourselves and others.
Average isn’t average because we have the ability to compare everything to everything else. All you have to do is search for it…and there it is. The visibility, reach and expansion of our knowledge are at an all-time high. OK is not OK any more. It was OK when that was all we knew. We didn’t know any better. In this world driven by speed, data and examples from all over the globe, we know what good is, we are pretty sure we know what right is, and we sure know what connected is. We have universal access to everything. And with this we have begun to develop a universal consciousness. We are holding each other to higher standards but we are holding ourselves to higher standards, too.
