#WFH: Put the Company Logo on the Desk
The subconscious mind doesn’t argue, it doesn’t reason and it doesn’t analyze. There is a great deal of controversy about the subconscious mind. There are many different definitions and many viewpoints. Psychologists like Carl Jung discussed its importance and relationship to behaviors and the conscious mind. There are many words used to describe “the thing” that makes the hair on your neck stand up and the cut on your finger heal — none of which are that important to us. Call this “thing” whatever you want to, but understand it is the part of your mind that does deductively what you think about all day long.
In deductive reasoning, a conclusion is reached from general truths; in inductive reasoning, the conclusion is reached from specific examples. Deductive is big to small and inductive is small to big. The truth depends on the premise and that premise can be absurd or true. It does matter. Here is an example: All dogs are animals and this is a dog, then this is an animal. All cats are great hunters and this is a cat, then this is a great hunter. Whoever made the last statement never knew my cat, Buttercup, who managed somehow to miss out on the hunting gene. In deductive reasoning, the conclusion is logically clear even though the premise is absurd. Inductive reason builds on events to draw a conclusion in the future. Here is an example of inductive reasoning: All the people I know carry their phones with them all day and all night; therefore, everyone carries their phones with them at all times. The important thing about deductive reasoning and the subconscious mind is its ability to bring about a result.
The subconscious works on suggestion. It doesn’t analyze whether the suggestion is true or false, it just proceeds to do what it does. Joseph Murphy popularized the subconscious mind and ushered in the mind-body connection in 1963 when he wrote, “As a man thinks, feels and believes, so is the condition of his mind, body and circumstances” (Murphy, 1963). Advertisers and companies know this and are experts at using it to get you to buy things. Politicians and governments know this and are experts at using it to get you to support causes. The thing believed in does not matter, it is the thought or symbol that does.
