#WFH Do You Have the Freedom to Respond?
The road to being able to set and enact your own priorities starts with your ability to choose how you respond. You have an innate right to creative self-expression. Some of us have to overcome stronger inner bondage than others. In most cases, we can do it if we choose to grow. Being able to set and enact your own priorities starts with being ruthlessly honest with yourself. Once you eliminate blame, victimhood and other excuses (like the electricity went out) from the virtual world, you can ask yourself what is stopping you from working and leading successfully? If you feel powerless or at the mercy of others – such as your spouse, kids, employer or client – you are going to have a difficult time setting and enacting priorities. Whether you are consciously or subconsciously sabotaging yourself, you want to make the choice to figure it out.
The virtual environment requires you to develop a healthy degree of self-respect. After all, you are alone with yourself a great deal of the time. If you don’t already have the capacity to take your life into your own hands, you need to develop it. You need to work on your ability to express yourself and what you want. Take time to become aware of any subconscious forces that are holding you back. Change your thinking, feeling and attitudes to ones that support you as an independent, autonomous and self-directed human being. Freedom of choice starts with a desire to be able to set and enact your own priorities. Without that desire to overcome any resistances to being in charge of you, you run the risk of getting stuck in old thought patterns, behaviors and feelings that will just not help you to succeed in the virtual environment. This is not about being self-centered or selfish. It is about being connected with what you really want and then setting off to achieve that.
The virtual world is all about connection. It is a living symbol of the collective consciousness reflected in our current society. There has never been anything like it before. It is in its infancy and, as we evolve, so will this conscious connection. Your ability to be a part of this conscious connection has accelerated dramatically in your lifetime. It doesn’t matter if you are a Generation Xer, a boomer or a millennial, you have experienced the pace of life accelerating. And it is going to continue to accelerate. Nowhere is this more apparent than in the virtual environment. There is more changing here than just the increasing rate of new technologies: 3G, 4G, 5G, etc. Roles are changing, social norms are changing and values are changing, too. Working in the virtual environment brings a great many of these changes front and center. Gender roles, parenting roles and flex work are only the tip of the iceberg. Life was much simpler in many ways when everyone saw you in the office and knew you were working. You had a company identity, a private identity and a social identity; now you have a Facebook page.
