#AI@Work: The Matrix Crosses Borders

Organizations will feel the impact on their internal and external processes. Anything that is routine, whether it is physical or cognitive, will be impacted. Internal reorganization and then the ability to do it again will be vital for survival. The traditional pyramid structure within organizations will not support this well. Hierarchies are not usually flexible.

The individual’s workplace will also change. Each individual will become more autonomous. Intelligent assistants will perform many of the daily routine tasks now performed by employees.

Workers will need to know how to communicate with these intelligent systems and robots and this will require training. COVID catapulted many into the remote workplace. It was only the beginning. Employees don’t have to be in the same place at the same time in order to exchange information. Technology has changed all that. Those companies that don’t have structures and systems flexible and integrated enough to support an autonomous workforce will need to upgrade. Those that do will need to refine processes and work on communication channels.
Companies will begin to cross borders and open up boundaries. Structures referred to as matrix structures allow for technical supervision and disciplinary supervision to be treated separately. Generally technical instruction comes from an individual employee by another organization. Activities in the matrix structure cross borders and o does supervision. Standards can be used and enforced across organizations and even countries. In the future international labor agreements may become standard in some sectors.

We can look forward to sharing space with all kinds of robots. Workers will work next to robots that support them both with physical labor and cognitive tasks. As companies roll out intelligent systems and integrate them into the workspaces, there will be a strong need for employees to be well trained in technical skills. This is important not only for operations but also for employee safety.
