#WFH: How Are You Connecting?

“I believe the choice to be excellent begins with aligning your thoughts and words with the intention to require more from yourself.” Oprah Winfrey

You can be waiting in line at the grocery store, at your kid’s soccer game or almost anywhere and order almost anything. We are no longer pinned to the device; the devices come with us wherever we go. The industrial age created isolated life functions in the same way it created isolated job functions. Fortunately, the virtual environment is helping to put an end to all of that. It is much more natural when we blend work, learning and living. People are, by nature, blended creatures. Information has been available anywhere anytime for the last 15 years, and now has become even more available with mobile access. Higher speeds and better devices allow us to do our banking, shopping, working and learning from almost anywhere.

More sites are going mobile and more people have access to audio, data and multimedia. Information is being aggregated and mobile is replacing .com. You can interact with your mobile devices by touch, voice, location or video. You no longer need to type. The search function has been amended to supply you with exactly what you need when you need it. You can find local restaurants, game scores, bank hours, even local news. You search and you get results. The major search engines understand “big data” about where you are, what you buy, who you buy it from. If you’re looking for answers, you can text or search “Eagles Football score from Sunday, October 28” and, voilà! There it is. It doesn’t matter if you are in the train, on the plane or at the beach, you can access the office or library, shop for clothes and talk to your friends (Fox, 2008).

All of this connection comes with a cost. Interactions used to be more linear. You got up in the morning and the stores were not open yet, so you couldn’t shop. You had breakfast and went to work. While you were at work, you worked. You couldn’t shop there, so you waited until your lunch hour or after work and then you went to the store. The segments of time and functions of your day aligned your interactions.
